6 July, 2020

CAPA - Centre for Aviation, in a report entitled: 'COVID 19: Canada's WestJet and Onex work to weather the storm', stated (02-Jul-2020) the outcome of WestJet's decision to become private will become clearer in the future, as it navigates the realities of COVID-19. Onex said it has been "really focused" on getting WestJet's "resting heart rate down to a level where we can emerge on the other side of this gradually", as well as "following the advice of the various federal and provincial health agencies in a way that allows us to recover gradually and meet demand as it surfaces". The carrier is adding some capacity back to its schedule, offering services to 45 destinations from 05-Jul-2020 to 04-Aug-2020. This marks a 102% increase in flights compared to Jun-2020, but a 76% decrease compared to Jun-2019. WestJet CEO Ed Sims described COVID-19's impact "as a valley, where we are now at the bottom, and we have a long and arduous climb out". [more - CAPA Analysis]
