Wellington International Airport installs nine fixed sensors to monitor runway conditions

12 February, 2020

Wellington Airport, in conjunction with MetService, installed (12-Feb-2020) nine fixed sensors to monitor runway surface conditions. The nine fixed sensors automatically measure temperature, moisture or ice on the runway surface and transmit the data directly to the airport's new Integrated Operations Centre, as well as assist pilots to more accurately calculate landing or take off performance. The airport implemented mobile sensors on runway inspection vehicles, allowing for spot checks of conditions on any part of the runway, taxiways or aprons. Wellington Airport is and is working with industry stakeholders to enable the information to be sent directly to air traffic control and pilots. [more - original PR]
