US Travel Association reports worst travel performance in Jun-2019 since Sep-2018

    US Travel Association reported (06-Aug-2019) travel to and within the US was up 2.4% year-on-year in Jun-2019, travel’s worst performance since Sep-2018 according to the association. The Leading Travel Index (LTI) forecast US travel volume will increase 1.8% through Dec-2019, while domestic travel will grow 2.0%. The association reported the following highlights:

    • Domestic market: Business travel down 0.2%, driven by cooling business investments and trade conflicts which are expected to continue effecting the market for the remainder of 2019. Leisure market grew 3.8%;
    • International market: 0.8% contraction in international inbound travel, below zero for the first time since Sep-2015. LTI predicts international inbound travel growth will remain at approximately -0.2% for the next six months.

    US Travel Association VP of research David Huether stated the “continued promotion of the US in the competitive global travel market is more critical than ever”, adding it is “imperative” Brand USA‘s programme to prevent the worsening decline in international inbound travel be reauthorised by the USgovernment.
