United Airlines upgauging aircraft on '30 to 40 flights a day' to promote social distancing: CEO

21 May, 2020

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said the carrier is upgauging aircraft on certain routes such as New York-Chicago to promote social distancing, with "30 to 40 flights a day" being upgauged (CNBC, 20-May-2020). As previously reported by CAPA, United will allow passengers to rebook or receive travel credit if their flight is expected to be close to full capacity. Mr Kirby noted more than 97% of passengers opt to stay on their existing flight even if capacity might be above 70%, adding that United has "chosen for now to attack this problem by giving customers the choice".
