United Airlines orders 50 A321XLRs to replace 757 fleet; defers A350 deliveries

United Airlines announced (03-Dec-2019) an order for 50 A321XLRs, scheduled for delivery from 2024. The aircraft will enable United to commence the replacement and retirement of its Boeing 757-200 fleet and meet operational needs by operating on certain trans Atlantic routes. The aircraft will also allow the carrier to consider launching new services from New York Newark and Washington to European destinations. United Airlines EVP and CCO Andrew Nocella stated the A321XLR “is an ideal one-for-one replacement for the older, less-efficient aircraft currently operating between some of the most vital cities in our intercontinental network”, adding the aircraft will also “open potential new destinations”. Additionally, United plans to postpone the delivery of A350s until 2027, in order to better align with operational needs. [more – original PR]
