TWU declares intention to fight full-time job redundancies at Alpha Flight Services

18 February, 2018

Australia's Transport Workers Union (TWU) secretary for the Victoria and Tasmania branch John Berger stated (15-Feb-2018) the union "will fight tooth-and-nail" to preserve jobs at Alpha Flight Services, following a statement by the company that it will end the employment of several hundred full-time workers. The TWU stated it is"outraged" that the company attempted to "intimidate workers in announcing that full-time staff will be the first to be made redundant but casuals retained", following its unsuccessful bid to retain Virgin Australia's nationwide catering services contract. Mr Berger stated there was "no justification for full-time workers to be made redundant" when casual workers will be retained to perform the same work and Alpha Flight Services will continue to use its labour hire resources. The TWU intends to hold a national meeting later in Feb-2018 to formulate an action plan to respond. [more - original PR]
