TTNQ: Canada visitation up 10%, New Zealand visitation down 15%

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) CEO Mark Olsen announced (22-Jan-2020) the tourism industry has shown strong growth, following three years of activities by TTNQ and the industry to better disperse visitors throughout the region, according to National Visitor Survey (NVS) and International Visitor Survey (IVS). Details include:

  • Domestic market increase of 5.7% year-on-year, with domestic volume increase of 8.5%, offsetting mixed international market increase of 1.2%;
  • Key international markets include: Canada up 10%, US up 8%, China up 3.8%, Japan up 2%;
  • UK and EU markets are suffering from Brexit and negative publicity on the health of the Great Barrier Reef, and New Zealand from increasing domestic competition;
  • Tropical North Queensland experienced decreases from the following nations: New Zealand down 15%, UK down 9%, EU down 9.8%;
