Tourism Research Australia outlines domestic tourism trends

Tourism Research Australia outlined (Aug-2020) the following key findings overnight trip tends in Australia:

  • Domestic overnight tourism losses reached around AUD13.7 billion (USD9.9 billion) between Jan-2020 and the end of May-2020. This was due to the impacts of the summer bushfires and coronavirus;
  • The bushfires resulted in domestic overnight visitor numbers falling 6% in Jan-2020 and 7% in Feb-2020;
  • Coronavirus began to impact domestic travel in Mar-2020 when trips fell 39%;
  • The full impact of coronavirus and travel restrictions meant Australians took 1.6 million overnight trips in Apr-2020. This was 86% or 9.6 million fewer trips than in April 2019;
  • Easing lockdown measures saw May-2020 show some improvement. However, overnight trips still fell 67% to 3.1 million compared with May-2019. [more - original PR]
