Southwest Airlines sees continuing improvements in demand, especially leisure travel

Southwest Airlines reported (17-Jun-2020) continued improvements in passenger demand, bookings and trip cancellations in Jun-2020, in line with signs of net positive bookings in early May-2020. The carrier particularly noted an increase in leisure driven demand. Approximate results for May-2020 and expectations for Jun/Jul-2020 are as follows:

  • May-2020:
    • Operating revenues: -85% to -90% year-on-year;
    • Capacity: -64%;
    • Load factor: -30%.
  • Jun-2020:
    • Operating revenues: -70% to -75%;
    • Capacity: -40% to -50%;
    • Load factor: -40% to -50%.
  • Jul-2020:
    • Operating revenues: -65% to -70%;
    • Capacity: -25% to -35%;
    • Load factor: -45% to -55%.
