Southwest Airlines at 'unsustainably low levels' of load factor: CCO

3 June, 2020

Southwest Airlines EVP and CCO Andrew Watterson, via Southwest's official blog, stated (May-2020) the carrier remains at "unsustainably low levels" of load factor, calling Apr-2020 "a bad month". However, he noted the carrier is "seeing improvements in our future", and is "more focused on progress rather than on any particular load factor" in "this environment". "This sustained progress is crucial to reducing cash burn and getting to break even", he noted, adding that while operating services at two thirds of capacity is necessary to "make people feel comfortable", the carrier "won't be prosperous until we're at load factors closer to what we saw earlier this year".
