Samoan Govt to stop Ti’avea Airport development if landowners demand higher compensation

Samoa‘s Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure Papali’i Niko Lee Hang said the Government will halt construction at Ti’avea Airport if local landowners continue to insist on higher compensation (Talamua, 08-Oct-2018). Mr Papali’i added: “I was told the village chiefs want to double the offer the Airport Authority initially offered for the project… My own opinion is if they want it doubled, it is better to stop it [airport development]. Why does it when it is expensive for the government?”. Ti’avea village chiefs are reportedly seeking WST5 million (USD1.9 million) in compensation.
