Roy Morgan: Australian domestic air travel up 7% to 8.5m pax for year to Mar-2019

Roy Morgan published (07-Jun-2019) research on the domestic airline travel industry in Australia, showing traffic grew 7% year-on-year to 8,460,000 for the year to Mar-2019. According to the research:

  • Qantas was the largest domestic carrier, handling 4.3 million domestic passengers, up 3.9%;
  • Jetstar handled more than four million passengers and had growth of 13.3%;
  • Virgin Australia handled almost 3.8 million passengers, up 15.9%;
  • Gen X are Australia's leading domestic air travellers, with 2,310,000 passengers for the period;
  • Millennials were then next largest category at 2,040,000 followed by Baby Boomers at 1,960,000;
  • Nearly half of Gen X, 47%, has travelled via a domestic airline in the last year;
  • Gen X comprise the largest share of customers for most of Australia's leading airlines including Qantas (30%), Virgin Australia (28%), Jetstar (28%), QantasLink (35%) and Rex (36%).
