Rex cuts frequency between King Island and Melbourne by 30% in response to higher airport charges

Regional Express (Rex) announced (18-Jul-2018) it will be reducing Melbourne-King Island from six to four times weekly effective 14-Aug-2018, in response to a decision by King Island Council (KIC) to “double airport charges” at King Island Airport. The carrier stated it warned KIC earlier in Jul-2018 that if they did not review their decision to increase the charges that “it would result in a degradation of air services to the remote Tasmanian Island”. Rex stated will be monitoring the situation thereafter and will make further adjustments to the schedule and ticket prices as necessary. The carrier added that it “regrets that the current myopic leadership at the local council has resulted in such an outcome but promises that it is open to reviewing the matter when there is a more enlightened leadership in place at the council”.
