Queensland Government‘s launched (07-Mar-2019) stage one of Mareeba Airport‘s AUD23 million (USD16.1 million) upgrade. Minister for Fire and Emergency Services River Craig Crawford commented: “The new facility will increase employment as it becomes a base for development of regional capabilities in avionics and aircraft maintenance… Stage one includes the new commercial precinct with 52 fully serviced lots suitable for aviation related businesses, including a wastewater treatment plant and drainage works to service the commercial precinct, upgrades to surrounding roads, a new airport water main and renewal of airport fencing”. Stage two will include a runway extension. The state government will contribute AUD13 million (USD9.1 million) towards the project, while Mareeba Shire Council has appointed Cairns based contractor FGF Developments to deliver the upgrade.
