Qantas defends transpacific fuel efficiency following last place ranking on ICCT study

17 January, 2018
Qantas head of fuel and environment Alan Milne said the carrier ranked last of 20 airlines in 2016 for transpacific fuel efficiency under a International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) study "chiefly because we use larger aircraft, fly very long distances and have premium cabins that naturally have fewer people on board" (Bloomberg, 17-Jan-2018). According to Qantas' CAPA profile, the carrier operates a mix of A380, A330-300 and Boeing 747-400 equipment on its Australia-US network. The carrier is also progressively deploying its new Boeing 787-9s on routes to the US, starting with Melbourne-Los Angeles.
