CAPA: Propping up Alitalia may have slowed Italian aviation market growth

CAPA - Centre for Aviation, in a report entitled: 'Italy: Europe's #1 by airline seats - briefly. Alitalia bailout looms', stated (11-May-2020) the current coronavirus crisis presents a major threat to the continued existence of any airline owned or based in Italy at all. The Italian state now plans to renationalise Alitalia, initially taking a 100% stake and setting aside EUR700 million to support the airline. However, propping up Alitalia for years may have actually slowed the growth of the Italian aviation market by blocking space that could be taken by more efficient operators. [more - CAPA Analysis]
