NZ MBIE: Tourism spending up in all regions for year to Jun-2018

New Zealand‘s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) released (26-Jul-2018) its Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates for the year ended June 2018, showing all national regions achieved growth in tourism spending in the period. The fastest-growing regions were Gisborne (+15.8% year-on-year), Canterbury (+13.4%) and Tasman (+13.2%). Each of these regions had experienced stronger-than-average spending in the summer peak over the past 12 months. MBIE manager of sector trends Mark Gordon reported: “One of the main drivers of the overall increase in regional tourism spending was an increase in expenditure on fuel and other automotive products, which grew on average 15.8% over the year”. Mr Gordon also noted a 10.5% increase in petrol prices would have contributed to this growth in fuel expenditure. [more – original PR]
