Norway’s Government proposes to increase tax on airfares to non European destinations

Norway‘s Government, via its 2019 budget proposal, recommended the tax on airline tickets to destinations outside of Europe be increased from NOK80 to NOK200 (USD10 to USD24) (Reuters, 09-Oct-2018). For airline tickets to European destinations, the Government proposed a decrease from NOK80 to NOK75 (USD10 to USD9). If approved, the changes will become effective 01-Apr-2019. Norwegian communications manager Lasse Sandaker-Nielsen commented: “It’s positive that the government reduces taxes on flights in Europe but the increase on international flights is bad news for Norway’s aviation industry, tourism and business”.
