Menzies forecast handling around 10,000 tons of cargo at the new facility in 2019. AirAsia X was the first international airline to handle cargo at Avalon, following the transfer of twice daily Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne service from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport to Avalon.
