Lufthansa Group pilots biometric boarding concept at Los Angeles Airport

19 March, 2018

Deutsche Lufthansa AG launched (19-Mar-2018) "one step" biometric boarding utilising facial recognition at Los Angeles International Airport, in a pilot project launched in collaboration with Amadeus, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Los Angeles World Airports Authority and Vision Box. Lufthansa said the trials "received very positive feedback" from guests, while enabling approximately 350 passengers to board an A380 in about 20 minutes. The systems capture passenger facial images for matching and verification with the CBP database. Passengers no longer need to show a boarding pass or passport at the gate. Lufthansa Group senior director product management ground and digital services Bjoern Becker said: "We anticipate that in near time, biometric boarding, as well as other aspects of the air travel experience, will be widely utilised across the US and beyond".
