Lufthansa CEO: Alitalia needs ‘the right partner and right restructuring’ for long term future

Lufthansa Group chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr said Alitalia needs “the right partner and the right restructuring” plan in order to have a long-term future (Il Sole 24 Ore, 16-Dec-2019). Mr Spohr said restructuring required for Lufthansa Group to consider a purchase could take up to 18 months and would involve a reduction in the fleet from 113 to 90 aircraft provided realistic cost reductions. It would also involve a reduction in staff from 11,500 currently to around 6000, including the sell-off of Alitalia‘s ground handling arm and a partnership established for its heavy maintenance operations at Rome Fiumicino Airport.
