Lufthansa Group chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr said Alitalia needs "the right partner and the right restructuring" plan in order to have a long-term future (Il Sole 24 Ore, 16-Dec-2019). Mr Spohr said restructuring required for Lufthansa Group to consider a purchase could take up to 18 months and would involve a reduction in the fleet from 113 to 90 aircraft provided realistic cost reductions. It would also involve a reduction in staff from 11,500 currently to around 6000, including the sell-off of Alitalia's ground handling arm and a partnership established for its heavy maintenance operations at Rome Fiumicino Airport.
