LGNZ welcomes announcement of referendum on visitor levy for Queenstown

Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) welcomed (08-Mar-2019) the announcement of a referendum to gauge public support for a Queenstown visitor levy. LGNZ noted the town's "exceptional challenges", with a population of 28,000 people providing infrastructure for over three million visitors p/a. LGNZ stated it has long advocated that "New Zealand's one size fits all policy for tourism and infrastructure funding has fallen far short in place like Queenstown, and that a levy for visitors is needed to cope with the growth".
