IATA: Unilateral actions on security create huge challenge for air transport industry

IATA DG and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said (24-May-2018) unilateral actions by stated, particularly on security, create a "huge challenge" to system resilience for air transport. Mr de Junica noted that the 2017 partial ban on large portable electronic devices (PEDs) introduced by the US and UK "contributed to slower growth in the Middle East" and while the PED ban was ultimately lifted, airlines struggled mightily to achieve alternative measures acceptable to the US TSA in a short timeframe. Mr de Juniac said that when faced with systemic disruptions to air transport, the industry some core principles that have guided aviation for decades: Aviation relies on global standards and best practices, never more so than in a crisis, and; aviation is built on partnerships which builds resiliency into the system.
