IATA: European airlines post significant slowdown in RPK growth in 2019

IATA, in its Feb-2020 Europe regional briefing, reported (26-Feb-2020) European airlines posted a significant slowdown in RPK growth, down from 7.5% growth in 2018 to 4.2% in 2019. The change is attributed to a weaker economic backdrop, declining business confidence, industrial disputes and airline collapses. Russian carriers recorded the second fastest RPK expansion of the key domestic markets, with growth of 6.7%, however the pace was 4pp slower compared to 2018. Demand growth slowed across other key regional markets in 2019, most notably in the Europe-Africa market, with a decrease of 3.5pp to 4.5%. [more - original PR]
