Future business class improvements will be in technology and weight reduction: Qatar Airways CEO

Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker commented on future developments in business class cabins, stating: “I really think there will be no room any more for improvement” (AFR/Australian Business Traveller, 13-Feb-2018). He added: “The only improvement will be in technology; in how much you can digitalise that product, and how light-weight you can make it because these seats are not very light”. Mr Al Baker said the airline is developing a 1-2-1 ‘QSuite’ business class layout for Boeing 787-9 and A380 aircraft (Australian Business Traveller, 13-Feb-2018). The cabin will be installed on 787s first and A380s will be upgraded from 2020. The airline will also install a “modified” ‘QSuite’ on 777X aircraft, which Mr Al Baker said “will be at least 22% lighter than the current QSuite”. The existing 777 fleet is expected to be upgraded to ‘QSuite’ cabins by mid 2019.
