EU Council adopts air transport fair competition law

9 April, 2019

EU Council adopted (09-Apr-2019) a new air transport fair competition law aimed at ensuring competition and maintaining high connectivity throughout the EU. The regulation gives the European Commission powers to carry out an investigation and take financial or operational measures for redress if a non EU airline uses a market distorting practice causing or clearly threatening to cause injury to an EU air carrier. New laws replace existing regulation 868/2004 which has never been used in practice and has "proved ineffective" in regulating competition among air carriers. [more - original PR]
