Destination Gold Coast: Commonwealth games produces 11% spike in domestic arrivals

Destination Gold Coast reported (03-Oct-2018) domestic arrivals to the Gold Coast rose 11% year-on-year during 2Q2018, to 897,000 overnight visitors. Visitor nights rose 16% to 3.2 million. Destination Gold Coast CEO Annaliese Battista said strong visitation during the Commonwealth Games off-set soft numbers prior to Apr-2018. The tourism agency “anticipated a large proportion of the April to June figures would be attributed to Games patronage” and noted that a 9.6% decline in Brisbane overnight visitors for the year, “clearly highlights three months of trepidation in the lead-up to the Games”.
