DATA SPOTLIGHT: Montenegro

1 April, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Montenegro, the tiny Balkan state that was the last country in Europe to record a confirmed case of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus that is sweeping across the globe.

When Montenegro confirmed its first case on 16-Mar-2020 it was the only country across the whole of Europe that was virus free. That is quite surprising when you consider the speed the virus spread across the rest of the continent, which is now home to seven of the top ten most infected countries.

It seems a surprise when you consider that the country is bordered by five other Balkan states: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo and Albania, and it is only 350 miles away from Italy, which now has the second most COVID-19 infections in the world and highest number of fatalities.

It could perhaps be explained by quick actions to initially stop tour groups from China and latterly to suspend LCC connections into northern Italy. It could also be due to the fact that Montenegro is a very seasonal destination with network capacity jumping almost 15 fold between March and its annual peak in August.
