DATA SPOTLIGHT: Kenya Airways

3 August, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Kenya Airways, which this month starts to resume and grow its international operations after a long-time shutdown.

The African carrier resumed regular international services on 01-Aug-2020, ending a suspension in place since 28-Mar-2020. The carrier estimated it will handle 8000 passengers in the first week of resumed operations as it adds services to 30 international destinations, including Addis Ababa, Dakar, Dubai, Kigali, London and Lusaka. It tentatively plans to return China and US services from 01-Oct-2020. It previously resumed domestic activities in Jul-2020.

Kenya Airways Group MD and CEO Allan Kilavuka has described 2020 as "a lost year", with demand expected to remain at less than 50% of capacity for the rest of 2020. However, Mr Kilavuka said the airline is prepared to increase frequencies if demand increases. He has also acknowledged that the airline is "thinking of reviewing our ticket prices upwards to compensate for diminished demand… "Running an airline is a costly affair, especially in this current situation".
