DATA SPOTLIGHT: Iran

12 May, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members to deliver a data snapshot, we look at Iran, which is currently home to the largest air route outside of Asia.

The Tehran-Masshad city pair is a key connectivity corridor in Iran, but right now, with global air services significantly dampened by travel restrictions, the air route that connects Masshad to Tehran's domestic airport, Mehrabad, is the 24th biggest in the world, based on OAG schedules combined with CAPA Fleet Database seat configurations. It is the largest air route outside of Asia and one of only two from outside the region to appear among the 70 biggest air routes for the week commencing 11-May-2020.

Iran is ahead of the curve of many countries with Covid-19 having recorded its first case back in Feb-2020. It has been quick to relax social distancing rules and domestic air connectivity has been on the rise, but there still remains a serious threat that the reduced measures could leave the country open to a second wave of infections.
