DATA SPOTLIGHT: Brisbane Airport

15 July, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Brisbane Airport, which was Australia's most domestically connected hub and the third busiest airport by passenger numbers ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic and is now celebrating the opening of a new runway.

A project that was planned for over many decades, but which has arrived at the one time during those many decades when it is perhaps least needed. But airports must look to the future and the much hoped-for return of 'normality' and Jim Parashos, executive general manager - aviation development and partnerships at Brisbane Airport, sees brighter days ahead.

He says: "A bit like the inaugural flight weather, while there are some remaining clouds there are clear skies ahead.... or possibly some light in what has been a dark tunnel for aviation, tourism and the world in general. And while it may all seem some time away, we now move towards a period of working with our airline, tourism, Government and business partners in rebuilding."

The new strip will provide Brisbane Airport with the greatest runway capacity of any capital city airport in the country. It currently has two runways of 1700m × 30m and 3540m × 45m. The new 3300m x 60m runway will raise capacity from 227,000 aircraft movements per annum to 360,000 by 2035.
