DATA SPOTLIGHT: Berlin Tegel Airport

27 May, 2020

This year The Blue Swan Daily will feature some of the leading airlines, airports and country markets for air travel. Here, using the extensive profile insights available to CAPA - Centre for Aviation members, we deliver a data snapshot on Berlin Tegel Airport, the former main gateway into Germany's capital city, which will close to commercial air traffic in a matter of weeks.

The recent story of aviation in Berlin has been all about the long-delayed opening of Berlin's new Brandenburg Airport which has been required to bring much-needed additional capacity into the city's airport system. That capacity is not quite so essential now that air transport has collapsed, but the new facility will finally open later this year.

Its arrival was always planned to coincide with the closure of Tegel Airport, but the current decline in air transport means that date has been brought forward by four months. In fact, to just over three weeks time and 15-Jun-2020.

It may not be permanent and Tegel will remain on standby for the remainder should we see a unlikely sudden rise in demand, but Berlin's other airport - Schönefeld, which had served Eastern Germany during the times of the city's separation - has capacity to sustain local traffic until Brandenburg's formal opening.
