Cook Islands MP: Measures required to slow tourism due to inadequate infrastructure and utilities

6 November, 2017

Cook Islands MP for Titikaveka Sel Napa called for measures to be implemented to slow tourism growth due to inadequate infrastructure and utilities, especially in Rarotonga (Fiji Times, 07-Nov-2017). Ms Napa quoted the Asian Development Bank which warned that roads, power, water, sewerage and solid waste disposal facilities needed to be upgraded, and said: "If we don't have the infrastructure and utilities in place, we shouldn't be encouraging ever increasing tourism. It doesn't make sense". Tourism numbers to the Cook Islands increased by 17% year-on-year in 2016.
