Cook Islands MP: Measures required to slow tourism due to inadequate infrastructure and utilities

Cook Islands MP for Titikaveka Sel Napa called for measures to be implemented to slow tourism growth due to inadequate infrastructure and utilities, especially in Rarotonga (Fiji Times, 07-Nov-2017). Ms Napa quoted the Asian Development Bank which warned that roads, power, water, sewerage and solid waste disposal facilities needed to be upgraded, and said: “If we don’t have the infrastructure and utilities in place, we shouldn’t be encouraging ever increasing tourism. It doesn’t make sense”. Tourism numbers to the Cook Islands increased by 17% year-on-year in 2016.
