IHG grows its boutique footprint across Spain and southern Europe

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced plans to open a new Hotel Indigo in the Spanish capital. The Hotel Indigo Madrid – Princesa will be one of seven IHG boutique hotels opening in key cities across Southern Europe in the next three to five years, the company revealed during the recent 19th WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council) Global Summit in Seville, Spain. The Hotel Indigo Madrid – Princesa is set to open its doors in autumn 2019 in the Moncloa-Argüelles area, a key location in the Spanish capital within walking distance of the city’s main business and leisure districts. Developed in partnership with Hotel Collection International, a Luxembourg-based third party operating company which currently operates four IHG properties, the hotel will feature 100 rooms inspired by local culture and history, a destination restaurant, fitness centre and a rooftop offering sweeping views of the city. The move builds on Hotel Indigo’s strong growth in the fast-growing boutique segment – it made 33 new hotel signings in 2018 and is now set to double its portfolio over the next three to five years. Current open properties in Southern Europe include Madrid (Gran Via), Barcelona, Rome and Paris, with pipeline developments opening in Venice, Milan and Belgrade in 2019, Verona in 2020, and Gibraltar in 2021.

German hotels hit the prize of increasing inbound arrivals

Hotels in Germany are poised to benefit from tourism numbers that are outpacing the growth of travel within the EU’s most visited country destinations, a new report has found.  The ‘State of the Nation 2019: How Big is the Opportunity for Hotel Bookings in Germany?’ study by guest acquisition platform SiteMinder, reveals that Germany’s inbound arrivals have almost doubled (96%) in the last 10 years to surpass the growth rates seen across the EU. The report shows that while France, Spain and Italy continue to lead the EU in total traveller numbers, they trail Germany’s 96% growth rate with inbound arrivals that have grown 26%, 65% and 65%, respectively, over the last 10 years. This pace is expected to continue over the next four years with Germany forecast to see a 14% jump in inbound arrivals by 2023 faster than Europe’s leading markets. According to the SiteMinder report, 27 million travellers visit Germany for leisure purposes while 11 million visit for business. Couples make up the largest portion of travellers (35%) followed by families (22%). More than 1-in-10 travel solo. Germany’s top five international source markets in 2018 were the Netherlands, Switzerland, USA, UK and Austria.
