CASA to introduce new drone registration and accreditation scheme in 2H2019

31 January, 2019

Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) reported (29-Jan-2019) consultation is underway on the details of a proposed comprehensive drone registration and accreditation scheme, which it plans to introduce progressively in 2H2019. Under the proposal all commercial drones will need to be registered, while recreational drones weighing more than 250 grams will be registered. The cost has yet to be determined by CASA, however it noted a AUD20 (USD14.54) p/a fee per person for recreational drones and for some model aircraft operators is likely. All recreational drone flyers 16 years and older will need to be accredited, as well as drone operators in the excluded category, which includes under two kilogram commercially operated drones, with accreditation to be renewed every three years.
