Brisbane Airport Corporation backs Virgin Australia application to launch Haneda service

    Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), in a letter to Australia‘s International Air Services Commission, expressed (30-Sep-2019) support for Virgin Australia‘s application for a Brisbane-Tokyo Haneda slot. BAC asserts that a new service from Brisbane Airport to Haneda would generate greater economic benefits to Australia than further capacity into Sydney. Details include:

    • Queensland accounts for 208,000 Japanese visitors p/a; 47% of visitation from Japan to Australia, the highest of any state or territory in the country and; AUD426.8 million (USD286 million) in expenditure by visitors from Japan, increasing at an average of 7.4% p/a for the past five years;
    • Brisbane Airport is the main gateway to Queensland and a major hub for distributing international travellers across Australia;
    • From a geographical position, Brisbane Airport is Australia’s best located major gateway to spread passenger traffic across Australia and thereby increase dispersal;
    • In international trade, Japan is Queensland’s second largest trading nation with USD12.18 billion (USD8.17 billion) of exports and AUD4.9 billion (USD3.35 billion) of imports in 2018/2019.
