BITRE: Australia intl pax up 7% in Aug-2018, LCC market share in intl pax drops

Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) reported (01-Nov-2018) the following international traffic highlights to/from Australia for Aug-2018:

  • Passengers: 3.5 million, +6.7% year-on-year;
  • Available seats: 4.5 million, +4.8%;
  • Cargo: 98,626 tonnes, +5.2%;
  • Flights: 17,263, +4.6%;
  • Aircraft movements: 17,785, +5.7%;
  • Top 10 international carriers:
    • Share of passengers carried:
      • Qantas: 17.1%, +0.5ppt;
      • Jetstar: 9.0%, -0.8ppt;
      • Singapore Airlines: 8.2%, stable;
      • Emirates: 7.9%, stable;
      • Virgin Australia: 6.4%, -0.1ppt;
      • Air New Zealand: 6.2%, -0.1ppt;
      • Cathay Pacific Airways: 4.4%, -0.2ppt;
      • Qatar Airways: 3.3%, +0.6ppt;
      • Etihad Airways: 3.3%, -0.3ppt;
      • China Southern Airlines: 3.1%, +0.2ppt;
    • Share of cargo carried:
      • Singapore Airlines: 16.5%, +0.4ppt;
      • Qantas: 12.4%, +0.3ppt;
      • Emirates: 7.6%, -1.7ppts;
      • Cathay Pacific Airways: 6.8%, -0.3ppt;

BITRE also reported LCCs AirAsia X, Cebu Pacific Air, Indonesia AirAsia, Jetstar, Jetstar Asia and Scoot Tigerair accounted for 14.8% of total international passenger traffic to/from Australia in Aug-2018. LCC share in Aug-2017 was 18.4%.
