BITRE: Australia intl pax up 5% to 4.1m in Jan-2019, LCC share decline continues

Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) reported (01-Apr-2019) the following international traffic highlights to/from Australia for Jan-2019:

  • Passengers: 4.1 million, +4.8% year-on-year;
  • Available seats: 5.0 million, +1.6%;
  • Cargo: 92,740 tonnes, -2.1%;
  • Flights: 18,843, +1.3%;
  • Aircraft movements: 19,275, +2.1%;
  • Top 10 international carriers:
    • Share of passengers carried:
      • Qantas: 16.9%, +0.4ppt;
      • Jetstar: 8.2%, -0.7ppt;
      • Singapore Airlines: 7.7%, +0.1ppt;
      • Emirates: 7.6%, -0.7ppt;
      • Air New Zealand: 6.8%, +0.5ppt;
      • Virgin Australia: 6.5%, +0.5ppt;
      • Cathay Pacific Airways: 4.2%, -0.1ppt;
      • China Southern Airlines: 3.9%, +0.4ppt;
      • AirAsia X: 2.9%, -0.6ppt;
      • Qatar Airways: 2.9%, +0.5ppt;
    • Share of cargo carried:
      • Singapore Airlines: 16.1%, -0.6ppt;
      • Qantas: 11.5%, +1.3ppts;
      • Emirates: 8.4%, +1.0ppt;

BITRE also reported LCCs AirAsia X, Cebu Pacific Air, Indonesia AirAsia, Jetstar, Jetstar Asia and Scoot Tigerair accounted for 14.4% of total international passenger traffic to/from Australia in Jan-2019. LCC share in Jan-2018 was 15.7%.
