Austrian coalition govt to introduce flat EUR12 fee per passenger for short, medium and long haul

2 January, 2020

Austria's new coalition government announced (Jan-2020) plans to implement a flat EUR12 fee per passenger per airfare for short, medium and long haul traffic as part of its 2020-2024 mandate. The new fee represents a EUR5.50 reduction for long haul compared with 2018 aviation taxes, but increases of EUR4.50 and EUR8.50 respectively for medium and short haul (austrianaviation.net, 02-Jan-2020). The government also called for greater "efforts at European level and in global bodies to promote a tax on kerosene in relation to other fuels", adding a "fair kerosene tax is needed at the EU level".
