Australia's Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities reported (Jun-2019) the following updates on Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird Walton) Airport (WSA):
- WSA signed MoUs with Qantas and Virgin to collaborate on the design of the airport, including integral functions such as sustainability, baggage handling, security and airport systems. WSA and the airlines will also commence early discussions about planning for potential routes;
- Approximately 11,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase and around 28,000 within five years of opening;
- WSA is driving further investment in the region, including federal and state government investment in road and rail connections;
- WSA will serve up to 10 million passengers p/a open opening, and a planned gradual expansion to two runways will eventually increase capacity to up to 82 million passengers p/a by 2063, the equivalent of London Heathrow and New York JFK;
- WSA to serve international and domestic services, as well as full service and low cost carriers, upon opening. [more - original PR]
