Auckland Airport proposes 'Sustainable Tourism Growth Monitor' to measure tourism industry growth

13 May, 2019

Auckland International Airport proposed (13-May-2019) a new framework for New Zealand to measure growth and sustainability in the tourism industry. Research commissioned by Auckland Airport, carried out by economists at Sense Partners, proposes a framework called the Sustainable Tourism Growth Monitor, which assists the industry in measuring the impact of tourism on a range of factors including infrastructure, congestion, the environment and community well being. Auckland Airport CEO Adrian Littlewood said: "We know tourism brings enormous benefits to New Zealand but our industry needs to manage its impact on our communities and the environment... If growth and sustainability don't go hand in hand, and New Zealanders don't understand the benefits tourism brings, we risk losing the support of local communities and undermining the experience of our visitors".
