ATSB reveals batteries caused over 100 instances on Australian flights in recent years

    Australian Transport and Safety Bureau (ATSB) revealed data highlighting that lithium-ion batteries posed potential fire hazards on services in Australia in 118 instances within the last five years (CHOICE, 20-Jun-2017). ATSB stated the number of occurrences does not appear to be increasing with at least 17 incidents recorded in 2016, a noteworthy drop compared to the 37 recorded in 2014. The results are Australian statistics and do not include incidents on foreign carrier services.
