The travel, tourism and aviation industries in the Asia Pacific region witness policy and upper level changes on a daily basis. It is important to not only keep tabs of these organisations direction, but to also monitor changes in executive branches to see the wider picture of the travel market. Blue Swan will keep you informed of these movements each month, with a full wrap of the key changes in the ASPAC market, while also looking forward to key appointments announced for the following month. Here are the key executive changes for Jul-2017:

  • Virgin Australia confirmed the departure of John Thomas as group executive. Mr Thomas has been replaced by Tigerair Australia CEO Rob Sharp, who will act in the role until a permanent candidate is confirmed. The changes were effective the week beginning 03-Jul-2017;
  • Air Berlin PLC appointed Gerd Becht as chairman, effective immediately;
  • easyJet announced CEO Carolyn McCall advised the board of her intention to leave easyJet in order to become CEO of ITV. Dame Carolyn is expected to leave easyJet before the end of 2017 and the carrier commenced the search for a successor;
  • Air New Zealand announced chief strategy, network and alliances officer Stephen Jones will depart the carrier in a few months to take up a senior leadership role at Wizz Air Holdings Plc;
  • Delta Air Lines subsidiary Delta Private Jets appointed Virgin Australia former COO Gary Hammes as president;
  • GoAir appointed Anand Sahai as CCO effective 24-Jul-2017, reporting to the CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer;
  • Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif designated Dr Musharraf Rasool Cyan as the new CEO of Pakistan International Airlines;
  • Aekyung Group announced a company wide restructuring on 24-Jul-2017, as part of which Ahn Yong-chan, who has led the airline business unit, was appointed CEO of the group’s LCC Jeju Air from 01-Aug-2017;
  • Vistara, and the two promoters of the company, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, named Leslie Thng to succeed Phee Teik Yeoh as CEO for Vistara, effective Oct-2017, subject to approval of the Government of India. Mr Yeoh will be returning to Singapore Airlines to take up a senior appointment.
  • Virgin Australia announced Chien-tsung Lu will step down from his role as non-executive director of the Board of the Virgin Australia Group effective immediately. Lan Xiang has been appointed to take over the role as the nominated representative of Nanshan Group;
  • easyJet appointed Thomas Haagensen as easyJet Europe;
  • Azul appointed John Rodgerson as CEO, effective immediately. Azul also appointed Alex Malfitani as CFO;
  • Airways New Zealand appointed Graeme Sumner as CEO, effective 09-Oct-2017. Mr Sumner currently serves as MD at Advanced Braking Technology in Melbourne, Australia;
  • Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) appointed Adam Rowe as GM business development and marketing to oversee the group’s marketing efforts across the four airports under its management, effective immediately;
  • Auckland International Airport appointed Scott Tasker as GM aeronautical commercial. Mr Tasker has served as acting GM aeronautical commercial since 2015. Mr Tasker is responsible for the airport’s route development, tourism strategies, and “sustainably growing” airline services;
  • Canberra Airport announced the appointment of Grahaem Duff as head of aviation;
  • Ballina Byron Airport manager Neil Weatherson and operations manager Graeme Gordon are retiring from their positions as of 14-Jul-2017;
  • Auckland Airport announced GM aeronautical operations Judy Nicholl will be leaving the company in Oct-2017 to pursue the position of Counties Power CEO;
  • Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) appointed Vishal Sinha as CEO of CWT India. Based at CWT India’s head office in Gurgaon, Mr Sinha will report to CWT president for Asia Pacific Kai Chan;
  • Webjet confirmed the following changes to its board, effective immediately:
    • Roger Sharp elected as the non-executive chairman, replacing David Clarke, who retires from the board. Mr Clark will remain as an external consultant for two years;
    • Rajiv Ramanathan has been appointed as an independent non-executive director.
  • Tourism Fiji appointed Michelle Stott as new director of marketing, and Kathy Koyamaibole as regional manager for Asia;
  • Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) appointed Brian Ruben Pedersen as CFO, effective 01-Jul-2017. Mr Pedersen was most recently CFO for Maersk Global Shared Services in Mumbai;
  • Gold Coast Airport appointed Ron Brent as chairman of the Community Aviation Consultation Group (CACG);
  • Dufry confirmed the appointment of Ken Tse as Dufry Australia GM from 10-Jul-2017, succeeding Philippe Boyer who is resigning for personal reasons. Mr Tse will report to Dufry CEO, Asia, Middle East and Australia Andrea Belardini and will also be part of Dufry Divisional Executive Team;
  • Air BP appointed Matt Elliott as CCO based in Sunbury, UK effective 17-Jul-2017. Mr Elliott previously held the position of BP New Zealand MD for the past five years;
  • Delta Cargo appointed Eric Anderson as director cargo sales for Asia Pacific, effective 01-Aug-2017.
