ANA's introduction of A380 to Hawaii to gain market share

8 March, 2019

All Nippon Airways (ANA) president Yuji Hirako said reservations for the carrier's Tokyo-Honolulu service increased by more than 40% year-on-year, reiterating his confidence in ANA's planned introduction of the A380 to Honolulu from May-2019 (Bloomberg, 07-Mar-2019). ANA also plans to introduce a second A380 on the route in Jul-2019 and a third in 2020. CEO Shinya Katanozaka added the carrier's plans to introduce all three A380 to Hawaii is aimed "to dominate that in terms of market share". Japan Airlines president Yuji Akasaka said the carrier welcomes the competition, "because it will expand the overall market for travel to Hawaii". He said JAL's strength lies in it operating to more than one city in Hawaii.
