American Airlines foresees 'significantly smaller international network' in 2021

2 July, 2020

American Airlines announced (01-Jul-2020) plans to adjust its international schedule for winter 2020 until summer 2021, in order to match demand. The carrier anticipates long haul international capacity will be down 25% year-on-year in summer 2021 due to COVID-19, meaning the carrier will be "forced...to reevaluate our network", according to chief revenue officer Vasu Raja. Mr Raja projected the airline will "have a significantly smaller international network in the year ahead", although added this is an opportunity which will be used to "hit reset and create a network using the strength of our strategic hubs that we can build and grow upon and be profitable on in this new environment". Consequently, American does not intend to operate or launch the following European services:

  • Charlotte Douglas-Barcelona;
  • Charlotte Douglas-Rome Fiumicino;
  • Charlotte Douglas-Paris Charles de Gaulle;
  • Dallas Fort Worth-Munich;
  • Miami-Milan Malpensa;
  • Chicago O'Hare-Budapest;
  • Chicago O'Hare-Krakow;
  • Chicago O'Hare-Prague;
