Air New Zealand reports better than expected fuel saving from mains power initiative

Air New Zealand reported an initiative to use mains electricity to provide onboard power for aircraft on the ground at Auckland and Christchurch airports has saved approximately 2.5 million litres of fuel since it commenced on 01-Jul-2017 (New Zealand Herald, 02-Aug-2018). Mains power replaces the use of auxiliary power units for Boeing 777, 787-9 and A320 aircraft powering systems such as air conditioning, lighting and mechanical systems while parked at the airports. Air New Zealand chief operational integrity and standards officer David Morgan said fuel savings from the initiative had exceeded expectations.
