Air Canada said airport slot model is 'not broken'; 'actually works'

4 June, 2018

Air Canada president and CEO Calin Rovinescu, speaking at the IATA AGM and World Air Transport Summit, stated (04-Jun-2018) slot regulations needs to support new market entry, and "historical dynamics should not block new entrants". He noted that the emergence of LCC and ULCC entrants shows that the model is working although it "needs to be continuously improved". Mr Rovinescu noted his belief that "the model is not broken" and it "actually works" with a number of independent slot coordinators and the participation of airlines and governments in the process. He noted that there is a "lot in the industry which is broken and this is not one of the areas which are broken". Mr Rovinescu also noted that this is a "infrastructure development problem not a slot allocation problem".
