CAPA: Active US airline fleet numbers remain nearly 40% below 2019 levels

CAPA - Centre for Aviation, in a report entitled: 'COVID-19: "choppy" recovery means downsizing US airline fleets', stated (17-Jul-2020) US airlines appear to have ground the majority of aircraft in the middle of May-2020, before an uptick in demand saw the return of some aircraft to service. According to the CAPA Fleet Database, the US had an active fleet of approximately 7885 aircraft by the end of 2019, compared to an inactive fleet of 4381 by May-2020. US full service carriers operated 958 aircraft in the middle of May-2020, compared to approximately 2878 by the end of 2019, while low cost carriers operated 619 aircraft by the middle of May-2020, compared to 1327 in 2019.
