    Visitor arrival to Samoa down 5% to 9154 in Nov-2016

    Samoa’s Bureau of Statistics reported (12-Mar-2017) visitor arrivals to Samoa down 4.6% year-on-year in Nov-2016. Detail include:

    • Visitor arrivals: 9154, -4.6% year-on-year;
      • New Zealand: 4042;
      • Australia: 1647;
      • USA: 583.


    Australia calls for strategies to attract more women into flying, engineering and senior roles

    Australia‘s Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester urged (10-Mar-2017) the aviation sector to develop strategies to attract more women into flying, engineering and other senior roles in the industry. The Ministry has released a workforce skills study, conducted by the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council, which found that outside of cabin crew roles, female participation in the aviation industry is as low as 10%. The report also identified the need for an industry-wide approach to workforce planning, and strong international opportunities for Australian aviation training providers. The findings of the report will considered by key aviation industry stakeholders and the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics in the context of the planned General Aviation Study.


    Canberra Airport to receive new public transport link from 20-Mar-2016

    Canberra Airport will receive a new public transport link between the terminal building and the city centre from 20-Mar-2017 (Canberra Times, 12-Mar-2017). Canberra Airport is currently serviced by a privately owned express shuttle, Canberra Airport Express.


    Hobart Airport opens new road access

    Hobart Airport opened a new road to improve traffic flow and access as part of the AUD38 million (USD28.6 million) runway extension project (The Mercury, 10-Mar-2017). The 2.1km road connects the airport with the Tasman Highway.


    Perth Airport pax up 1% in Jan-2017

    Perth Airport, via its official website, reported (Mar-2017) passenger numbers up 1% – traffic highlights for Jan-2017:

    • Passengers: 1.2 million, +1.0% year-on-year;
      • Domestic: 789,785, +0.9%;
      • International: 435,672, +1.2%;
    • Aircraft movements: 10,850, -2.0%.


    TTF welcomes Victorian Government initiative to get more women into the transport sector

    Tourism & Transport Forum Australia (TTF) welcomed (10-Mar-2017) the AUD1 million (USD754,800) ‘Women in Transport’ programme released by the Victorian Government, to attract more women to the transport sector. The programme will provide scholarships to women studying transport-related degrees, will increase the number and influence of women employed in the transport industry, with a goal of increasing the number of women working in the transport sector from 16% to 25% by 2020.


    Lockheed Martin partners with women in Aviation/Aerospace

    Lockheed Martin announced (10-Mar-2017) a partnership with Women in Aviation/Aerospace Australia (WA/AA) to provide 60 spaces for young women to attend WA/AA summits in Queensland and Victoria during 2017.
